Dishwasher Won't Drain: Filter-to-Sink Checklist
Follow the drain path from the dishwasher filter to the sink connection.
Clean the filter, verify the pump cover is seated, and check the air gap, disposer, and accessible drain hose. A new disposer connection may still contain its knockout plug.
Checks to make in order
Cancel and wait
Allow the dishwasher's drain attempt to finish before opening it.
Clean the filter
Watch for broken glass and reinstall the filter in the locked position.
Check the sink side
Clear the air gap or disposer and verify the sink itself drains.
Inspect the hose
Look for a kink without pulling out a hardwired dishwasher.
Stop and get help when
- Water appears under the dishwasher
- The drain pump does not run or makes a harsh grinding sound
- Access requires moving or opening the energized appliance
