Washer Won't Spin: Load, Level, and Motor Checks
Separate an unbalanced load from a drain, door-lock, or motor problem.
The washer usually will not spin if it cannot drain, lock the door, or balance the load. Correct those conditions before treating it as a motor failure.
Checks to make in order
Check for retained water
A drain problem commonly prevents the final spin.
Redistribute the load
Untangle items and avoid washing one heavy object alone.
Confirm the door or lid locks
Remove clothing from the latch and close it normally.
Check that the cabinet is level
All feet should contact a solid floor without rocking.
Stop and get help when
- The drum is difficult to turn by hand while powered off
- A burning smell, hard banging, or grinding occurs
- Balanced loads repeatedly stop before spin
