Amber often means startup, a physical link without internet, or an update; red more often indicates a critical device problem. Meanings vary by brand and model.

Checks to make in order

1

Identify the icon

Power, Internet, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet LEDs use colors differently.

2

Note solid versus blinking

A blinking update light is not handled like a solid fault light.

3

Check upstream service

Verify modem power, provider outage status, and the WAN cable.

4

Restart only when safe

Do not interrupt an update or reset; restart the modem first and router second.

Stop point

Stop and get help when

  • The power adapter is unusually hot or damaged
  • A critical red light remains after the documented recovery
  • The router appears stuck in a firmware-update or recovery pattern
