Washer Door Won't Lock: Safe Checks
Remove simple obstructions without bypassing an important safety interlock.
Move clothing away from the gasket, wipe the latch area, and close the door with normal pressure. Never bypass or force the lock.
Checks to make in order
Wait for movement to stop
Do not reach into the washer until the drum is still.
Remove trapped fabric
Check the gasket, latch hook, and door opening.
Inspect visible parts
Look for a cracked hook, loose hinge, or detergent buildup.
Restart once
After the tub is empty, disconnect power briefly and retry.
Stop and get help when
- The latch or hinge is visibly broken
- The door cannot unlock after water has drained
- The washer attempts to run without a secure door
